How Does IPL Work?

Tina is trained in the use of Intense pulsed light (IPL)therapy,  a technology developed to treat skin for the purposes of hair removal, photorejuvenation, and the relief of acne. IPL uses a high-powered, hand-held, computer-controlled flashgun to deliver an intense, visible, broad-spectrum pulse of light to the treatment area.

These light pulses target and destroy specific structures including melanin in hair and oxyhemoglobin in blood vessels. IPL shares some similarities with laser treatments, in that they both use light to heat and destroy their targets. Unlike lasers however, IPL uses a broad spectrum of light options that allow it to be used effectively against a wider range of skin conditions.

IPL pulses are applied to the surface of the skin through which they travel to strikes the base of the hair shaft, heating the melanin located there. As the melanin gets hot, it destroys the hair-producing papilla causing the hair to fall out and rendered unable to grow again.

IPL Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of IPL?

IPL is much more comfortable than waxing, electrolysis, and even traditional laser. The cost is less than other technology methods. Although it may be slightly more expensive in the short-term, in the long run it will save you thousands of dollars over other hair removal options, like waxing.

How many sessions are required?

Most of my clients see the results they are looking for in 8-12 sessions on average for permanent results. You may see results as early as your first session. However, once the first few sessions have been completed, I can reliably tell how many more treatments will be required based on initial progress.

Does IPL work / is it safe?

IPL is safe and effective, however, If I feel that this treatment will not suitable for your skin and hair type, I will recommend another hair removal method such as SHR. Keep in mind though that I only use TGA approved machines that the relevant governing body certifies as a safe and effective equipment.

Is IPL safe for blonde, grey, red or white hair?

Generally yes. IPL laser hair removal works best on light skin with dark hair. It focuses heat on the melanin in the hair and carries it into the follicle. Hairs with minimal or no melanin will not be able to get long-term results.

Should I have a patch test?

Generally yes, if you’ve not had IPL treatment before. And you should have a patch test for each part of the body that you want treated. This is because each area on an individual can react differently to the same treatment. A different type of machine, even if it’s the same type of treatment, may cause a different reaction in the same person. For your safety, I require a test patch for every area that you want to treat with IPL.

Is IPL hair removal permanent?

Clients receiving IPL hair removal treatment can expect 80-90% permanent hair reduction. Any hair that does grow back will usually be lighter, finer and thinner. After completing treatment, some clients may need to return 1 or 2 times a year for occasional touch-ups to accommodate for hormonal influences.

How does IPL and Laser differ?

Both provide similar results within a similar time-frame. Traditional laser is a focused beam of light, while IPL is a broader spectrum of wavelengths. Generally, if there’s any type of skin reaction during treatment it is more likely to be permanent with traditional laser. You may need one or two additional treatments with IPL over traditional laser. But, each person and each area will react differently. You may find that traditional laser did not work for you, but IPL laser could be highly effective. Most people feel that IPL is much more comfortable.

Does IPL work on darker skin?

Because IPL laser hair removal focuses on the melanin, it may either be ineffective or pose risk in areas with little contrast between skin and hair color. The test patch can help me decide if an area may suitable for IPL treatment. Some people with darker skin tones may find SHR a better option.
